Healthier Buffalo Chicken Dip

Do you LOVE good football snacks? Additionally, are you less than enthused about the unhealthy price tag that comes with each famous dip? If so, you’re in good company! For me, part of what makes football season so great, is the delicious foods that come with it: buffalo chicken dip, bean dip, queso, chili, and the list goes on! But year after year I always feel the sluggishness that comes with eating these unhealthy snacks. Determined to put an end to this, I decided to figure out a way to make one of my favorites, Buffalo Chicken Dip, healthier, tastier, and more nourishing then the original version. And friends, the finished product will leave your mouth watering! I promise… it’s THAT good!

This buffalo chicken dip is packed with flavor, creaminess, and half the fat of original buffalo chicken dip. It’s spicy, cheesy, and melt-in-your-mouth amazing, yet packed with so many healthier ingredients for a fun, nourishing football snack!

In more ways than one, this recipe will serve your health goals while also being a nourishing indulgence!

Overall, this recipe can serve you in a variety of ways:

  1. It’s an easy & fast recipe (like, SO simple!)

  2. Easily transferable to friends or families houses for game days

  3. Packed with lean nourishing protein

  4. A great snack for gluten free people (even the tortilla chips!)

What’s not to love?!

Just 6 Ingredients:

  1. Chicken

  2. Greek Yogurt

  3. Cottage Cheese

  4. Cheddar Cheese

  5. Garlic Powder

  6. Frank’s Hot Sauce

For this recipe, I started by switching out cream cheese for something just as tart, but much healthier: greek yogurt. This gives the dip it’s creamy, tart, and smooth consistency. Next, instead of motzeralla cheese, I opted for fat-free cottage cheese. Cottage cheese is full of lean protein, and is a great addition to this dip because of it’s mild flavor and cheesy texture. It also has 0% fat… which is a win, win for this healthier dip!

Next, Franks Hot Sauce. This can be substituted for other hot sauces, but Franks will give you the original buffalo flavor you’re looking for. I opted for 1/4 cup of hot sauce, but traditionally, it’s about 1/2 cup. I thought the spiciness of mine was perfect, but for some people, they may want to add 1/2 cup to tone up the heat! Garlic powder adds just a hint of flavor and depth, which I love. Lastly, I add a little bit of cheddar cheese to the mixture, and then spread the rest of the cheese on top.

Bake for 20 minutes at 350 and WALA! You have a beautiful, healthier dip that does NOT sacrifice in flavor. I hope you love it!

I hope this Buffalo Dip serves you well in all of your September and game day festivities! Happy Cooking!

Healthy Buffalo Chicken Dip

Time: 25 minutes | Serves: 4-6

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups plain chicken, shredded (this can be from a rotisserie chicken or insta-pot chicken, really whatever is easiest… I cooked mine in the oven at 350F for 20 minutes)

  • 1 cup plain greek yogurt (0%, 2%, or whole works great!)

  • 1/2 cup fat-free cottage cheese

  • 1/4 cup Franks Hot Sauce (this is the perfect amount for it to be slightly spicy… if you want it more spicy, add 1/2 cup)

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 & 1/2 cups grass-fed cheddar cheese

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. To a 9x9 baking dish, add chicken, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, hot sauce, garlic powder, and 1/2 cup of the cheddar cheese, reserving the rest for the top. Mix altogether until combined.

  2. Next, sprinkle the remaining cheese on top and evenly spread out. Place Buffalo Dip in the oven and bake for 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted on top and the mixture is bubbly.

  3. Serve with tortilla chips and enjoy!
